Repentance – What does It Mean for Us?
As Christians, we often think, “I’m a child of God. I believe in Jesus. I’m OK.” Our faith isn’t a kind of “self-help” program that takes us from “okay” to “A-okay!” Sometimes it’s actually hard to speak the gospel today because people don’t think they need to be “saved” from anything. As far back as 1946, Pope Pius XII said, “Perhaps the greatest sin in the world today is that men have begun to lose the sense of sin.” Christianity doesn’t seem like the Good News unless we think our sin is ugly; that our sin is bad news. Repentance is where we start – or start over again and again and again! We must recognize that we are lost without God, and we are doomed to an eternal death apart from Him because we lack His grace, which makes us alive in Him. When we choose sin, it’s like we are saying to God: “I wish you didn’t exist so I could do whatever I want with my life.” We need to recognize our sin – even as Christians! We need contrite hearts – true sorrow for our sin that comes from love for God and hatred of sin; a regret that comes from recognizing the offense we have committed against God. We need to recognize our sin and repent – have sorrow for our sins. We must see ourselves truthfully in the light of the goodness, holiness and glory of God. We must turn away from anything that would lead us away from God, and turn to God in faith.
